AAFCO Admits Rendered Pets in Pet Food
« on: August 24, 2010, 12:04:51 PM »
"For those who were still on the fence, here’s a just released video of AAFCO’s president finally admitting, on camera, that it’s allowable (and, in fact, fairly common practice) for rendered pets to end up in pet food."

This is why it's important to make sure your dog food specifically says "chicken" or "beef" or "venison" or something, instead of just "meat" or "meat and bone meal."

I'm switching the cat's food once my money gets here. The 4th ingredient in her food is "meat and bone meal". Suddenly the concept makes my stomach churn. (okay, I admit, I don't watch the cat's food as close as the dog's)

Thanks for posting the link. I've known about this but could never find a source, so I didn't make the claim often.

UHG OH GAWD EEWWW.
I had to go read the labels on the dog and cat food to make sure I wasn't causing any canibals.

Yep!  Don't feed unspecified animal anything. (digest, meal, fat) I mentioned to you guys in other posts over years about Purina putting slurry from rendering plants into their dog and cat food. I hauled stuff for Purina and Iams many times as have my trucker friends. I know what was in those vats I hauled! Cuz they came out of rendering plants and I hauled them to Purina pet food manufacturing plants.

The biggest problem is the euthanasia chemicals that aren't removed in processing. They are toxic.

I was not very familiar with rendering. I found http://www.preciouspets.org/rendering.htm and it is a very disturbing article. Remind me to also never leave a dead pet at the vet's....

Maybe this one deserved a caution sign (not your fault spectrum, just happened to read it as I was eating breakfast).

Maybe this homecooking dog meals isn't as bad as I thought (though I know the food she was on had all identified meat sources).

Hope- I agree on the caution sign. I felt sick when I first read this and that does not happen easily.

Can I go puke now? Because I just found out that our cat food has "Animal fat" in it...

There is a wonderful book in publication called "Food Pets Die For" -- wonderful and informative.  A must read for all pet owners....

Is there a way you can make sure that none of your pets remains end up in places like this?  I know there are private cremations, but I have also heard they are not quite 'private'.

I think the only way you can be 100% sure is to bury them yourself or be present when they are cremated.

I would either bury the remains myself or go through an independent private company. We have PetAngel here and they are VERY good. Don't do private cremation through a humane society...here we had someone go through the humane society and they LOST the dog's body
