help with my service dog in training
« on: June 07, 2010, 09:53:26 PM »
Hello everyone..I am new here and I thank Kristen for referring me here. I have a GSD service dog who is 11 and retired. Atrice was trained by myself as dogs were my career for almost 20 years.
I have Whisper now who is also a GSD. Due to my disabilities worsening, I need help with her training as far as taking Whisper out with me.Whisper is 16 months old and knows basic ob and some retrieveal, but only in the house. I have a power chair but cannot use it outside cuz the landlord does not want ramps. I can walk some and really benefit using a service dog for balance. Atrice has been awesome as a best friend and helper alike. I know Whisper will be just as great but I do need help and live on ssdi alone. Can someone please help me? Thank you for taking the time to read this. Service dogs are wonderful and I so miss going out with my best friends! Atrice, although retired still wants to help , so I have her do little things like bring items to me so she's not left out. thanks again! Your new friend GSD77 aka laurie

I'm sorry your landlord resists the idea of providing a ramp so you can use your wheelchair outside. I'm not sure what kind of property you're renting, and I'm definitely not a lawyer so I can't give any specific advice, but have you tried to see if there's any legal help to be had for your situation? Installing a ramp seems pretty simple and reasonable to me, especially if it would enable you to be more independent outside your home.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking for a referral to a trainer, or are you asking for one of us to help you train your dog?

I would strongly recommend you look into whether or not your housing is covered under the Fair Housing Act. Your landlord may not have a say in the ramp installation if it's a reasonable accommodation due to your disability.
The decisions we make and the way we behave are what ultimately shape our character.

Hello! It is very nice to meet you! I am also in a wheelchair. Our house has a few steps leading up to the front door. I have a portable ramp. It is metal and folds up and has a handle to make it easy to carry like a suitecase. I forget how much we paid for ours but it works great.I don't know it that might be an option for you or not. I bought mine in Florida but I know you can find them just about at any place that sells wheelchairs or ramps. There is a site for disabled people by disabled people and they trade or sell really cheap both new and used equipment. Everthing from canes to wheelchair accessible houses. Some times they have the portable ramps on there for pretty cheap. The site is disableddealer dot com. As far as someone coming and helping you...what state do you live in? Maybe one of us lives close enough. Good luck to you and I look forward to reading your future post!

I'm not in a wheelchair but I ride a scooter when I'm away from my house...shopping, events, etc.  I use the suitcase type folding ramp and got mine on the internet for about $140.  I use it to get my scooter on and off my Dodge caravan.  It fits perfectly in the side door.  I use a five footer for that height of incline.
