My rat is sick...
« on: July 22, 2010, 02:42:49 PM »
Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this, but I don't know where else to.

My 1 1/2 yo rat, who I hand raised from a baby, is very sick.  I had noticed he was breathing oddly, and getting thin, so today we went to the vet.  First of all, the tech told me he'd lost 150 grams, about 1/3 of his body weight, since the last visit.  She actually weighed him 3 times because she couldn't believe it.  Then the vet came.  Apparently he hasn't been eating b/c he has to work so hard to breath that he can't manage solid food.  Then she took some x-rays, since there was no obvious tumor or anything.  She said he either has pneumonia, or heart failure.  She gave him some medicine that helps w/ heart failure but not pneumonia, and started him on antibiotics.  So if he feels better tomorrow, it's his heart.  Otherwise, it must be pneumonia.

As some of you may know, there is no good outcome for this.  There is nothing they can do for his heart, and pneumonia is VERY serious for rats.  So, I'm sitting here feeding my rat wet kitten food, because that's all I can do.   This rat is so sweet, they had trouble weighing him b/c he kept trying to kiss them, and its just going to break my heart if he dies this young.

I'm sorry your rat is sick. Rats are so full of enthusiasm for life that it can be devastating to witness how fragile they are and how quickly their health can go downhill. You and your furry friend will be in my thoughts.

I'm so sorry   I was devastated when my hairless rats died. The mother passed from a series of tumors, and the daughter mourned herself to death.

Oh I am so sorry.  I had a pet rat when I was high school and they are such sweet and affectionate creatures.  he ended up with an upper respiratory infection when he was 2 so I know how dangerous those can be.  I hope that the medications give your guy some relief.  How very sad though.

I'm so sorry.  :sad:My rats one and a half years old too, and she's starting to lose weight, sleeping a lot more and isn't climbing as well.  I recently took her to the vets to get four lumps checked out but they were all benign, but now her nose is constantly wet with porphyrin so I'm very worried she's going to pass away soon.

Again, I'm so sorry your little rat is sick.

Thank you for all the good wishes.
I think he's the friendliest rat I've had in over 6 years, so if he doesn't make it I'll really miss him.  By now I'm prepared for rats to bet cancer, have strokes, etc... but hear failure is something that I never considered.  I had a girl die of pneumonia once, and it was the saddest of all the rattie deaths I've seen.  I've never owned a rat that caught pneumonia and lived.  That, in a nut shell, is why I'm so worried.
