That makes a lot more sense, thanks for explaining.  So I should put food down, leave it down for a little while, then pick it back up whether she eats it or not?  Continue until she gets hungry enough that she eats it while it is down?

I've been leaning toward dry, the more I hear, the more I lean toward it.

I want to chime in on the brand of food I feed my GSD, who has a fussy stomach and allergies and is a picky eater. Drs. Smith and Foster Lamb and Brown Rice. She likes it, she digests it very well, and her hot spot issues began to clear up when I put her on it. It is delivered to our door and is quite reasonable in price.

What do you mean about making a picky eater?  I guess I don't understand how adding a little canned food is going to make her picky.  If I shouldn't do it, I won't, I guess I'd just prefer a little more explanation so I can understand.

By trying to make a dog eat a food you want it to eat by putting treats in it (like wet canned dog food) you are training it to not eat food given to it until it tastes like the treats you trained it to eat.

Wet dog food also causes less formed stools than I care to pick up, it is not as nutricious as high quality kibble, it causes greater amounts of plaque and tartar on the dog's teeth.

If your dog is very very ill, it may be appropriate upon the vets directives to do that to enhance the number of calories it ingests per meal/day.

I have fed Diamond Dog Food products for 18 years with a variety of breeds and working dogs. They have a vet on staff that honestly answers phone questions about their foods. (Not like Purina which denies they use slurry from rendering plants in their dog foods - I know different because as a trucker I have hauled slurry from rendering plants in AR to Purina pet food processing plants, as has my former son in law)

For my dogs, I like Taste of The Wild, 4 Health, and Diamond Naturals Adult Lamb and Rice. Tay is allergic to chicken (loose stool). I like the percent fat and protein in these products as my dogs all have fantastic coats, perfect weight, excellent teeth, great energy, very small and compact stools.

If I were you, I would more deeply study just how dog food is manufactured, talk to your vet about what nutrients - fats - proteins - calories your dog requires. If your vet doesn't seem  confident... ask a breed specific professional breeder exhibtor what they feed their dogs. If you don't  like or trust the responses we give you here in the group.

It is my opinion that feeding any food that contains unspecified animal digest or unspecified animal fat should not be fed to any dog.... because of from whence those things come from.

One last thing: when your dog is hungry enough, it will eat what you choose to feed it..... without "jazzing it up".  You can try scheduled feeding in your dog's crate.  Give the amount  in a dish. 45 minutes later remove the dish whether the dog ate it or not. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Like my little kids.... they were served their meals. I eat sloooow. When I was through eatting, the table was cleared: including their dishes of their uneatten food (that was thrownout). They were allowed no snacking, treat beverages or dessert at all for any reason if they did not eat their meal.

No dog, horse, kid I ever raised starved to death.

I should have added:   Repeat the feeding process only at scheduled feeding times.  ie: 2 cups of kibble at 7 a.m.and 7 p.m.

Or even 4 cups at bed time leaving the dish until morning. (That's my breeders method.)

I free feed.... but never give human food..... and rarely treats.

I like to give Yukon solid gold. Ive had no problems with that brand. I gave Imes to my last sdit and she and her brother had seriously nasty kennels in the morning pulse I was getting up every two hrs to take them out I switched to Purana shortly after that now with Yu I'm avoiding that all together :trx:

Thanks for the explanation, Roxie, I'm going to start doing that, I think.

Generally, the stuff you can buy at Walmart is [censored]. They may have a couple good things, but if you have other options, I'd go with that. Semi-moist foods are no good at all. Most, of not all, of them are full of corn syrup and sugar. That's asking for diabetes (and dogs are ALWAY insulin-dependent when they develop diabetes).

Out of ALL brands, I would say my top choices are Orijen, followed by Taste of the Wild. Evo/Innova/California Natural are also great foods right now, but they were recently purchased by Proctor and Gamble, so I suspect the quality will decrease a good deal very soon (hopefully I'm wrong and they really will maintain a high quality food, because right now they really are excellent choices).

Remember that when you feed a higher quality food, you can get away with feeding much less. I used to feed Purina ONE, and Gavroche (60 pounds) needed 3 cups a day to maintain his weight. He also had diarrhea fairly regularly.  Now he's on Taste of the Wild and eats 1 1/3 cups a day and will probably be cut back just a little bit soon (he's a pound or two more than I'd like him to be). The bag costs about the same as a bag of Purina ONE, but lasts MUCH longer.

The Dr.s Mith & Foster looks really good! Not enough fat though at 11% to help Tay hold his weight on.  I definately would feed that food otherwise.  Tay requires 16% fat or he looks frailer than a Greyhound!

Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions!  I'm still researching brands, but it appears that the general consensus of the board leans toward Taste of the Wild.  I'm planning an "outing" to TSC to train and study content labels.  It will be great for Maigee because the feed section offers a special temptation for Maigee due to the spilled feed on the ground.

Diamond Dog food is very accommodating. You might contact them and ask for a sample of the product you are considering.....  they have sent me product samples over the years. One time they send me a coupon for a 30 pound bag. (But I think that was more because I was a 14 year customer.)

Also ask other manufacturers, too. I'm sure most of the dog food companies are more than willing to  send a sample.

Thanks for the suggestion!  That is a very good idea, perhaps they could send me information on ingredients and things as well.  I think I will request it anyway, it can't hurt anything!

Yes, definitely contact companies for samples. I know people who have been sent boxes of samples. I told one of my coworkers (her dog is on chemo) to ask for some Taste of the Wild samples after she bought a big bag of Wilderness and her dog didn't touch it.

Also to know of the ingredients in a dog food, just go to the dog food's website or a site that sell and deliver dog food to consumers.  You can click on "other information" or "ingredients" and everything will be printed that's on the bag.

When you go to a feed or pet store, just read the ingredient panel to get the percentages, nutrients and ingredients... and companycustomer service phone and address.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ is also a good resource for comparing/contrasting different brands and formulas of dog food. I've found it to be very helpful in the past.

I feed Diamond Naturals (kibble--lamb and rice variety) and have been very happy with it.
