Do you keep an animal first aid kit?  What do you keep in it?

I don't have a first aid kit specifically for the animals, but I do keep first aid materials on hand (because I am accident-prone.) I have a roll of gauze, a bandage wrap, antibiotic cream, hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, cotton pads, and styptic powder in case I cut the quick while nail trimming.

I also have the book Hands-On Dog Care: The Complete Book of Canine First Aid from Doral Publishing. It was written by two veterinarians and is a very, very helpful guide to what to rush the dog to the vet for vs. what to treat at home and keep an eye on, as well as step-by-step instructions on first aid for dogs. This book has been very helpful to me and I consider it a great resource for dog owners.

You can also always use corn starch or baking soda instead of a septic powder. My old vet who also was a vet at the Denver Zoo claimed he seen corn starch work as well and caused no issues no matter the animal they used it on. He didn't use it in the office because it wasn't accepted practice but corn starch was all he kept for his pets at home: dogs, cats, birds, and reptiles. In our house the family and pets share the big first aid kit with triple antibiotic, peroxide, rubbing alcohol, bandages, gauze, etc.

Great guide I found: http://drfry.biz/custom3_2.html] http://drfry.biz/custom3_2.html

Yeah, I used to use cornstarch for my rabbits, in my opinion, it worked better than the steptic powders.

I had forgotten all about corn starch for birds. (I am putting together a first aid kit for our disaster shelter.)
