Question about getting a letter
« on: August 02, 2010, 10:44:57 AM »

Hello,

I came across this forum via the Depression Forums site.  ESD sounds like something I could or should have in my therapy program.  I’m bipolar (according to the psych at the VA hospital), depressed (according to a therapist not associated with the VA).

I had a job where I worked with dogs and LOVED it.  Didn’t like the co-workers, save for one, and the rest stressed me out so badly that there were many times I would shut down or wanted to leave but stayed because I wanted to be around the dogs.

I currently live in a place where I was under the impression that we were permitted to have dogs.  The Locator who found the place for me also assured me we were allowed to have dogs (since that was one of my requests).  Well when it came down to asking about how much the deposit would be to have a dog I discovered from the manager and the landlord that they didn’t accept dogs.  I was pretty much devastated.    Apparently they had changed everything literally a month after I had moved in.

I lost my job, due to an illness which is being investigated, so no access to dogs.

Not a person who gets out; I only go to the grocers, to school and to friends’ houses but that’s about it.  Right now I have a 3 week break before next semester starts up and it’s going to be the same routine of staying home and being reclusive.  I get unhappy and it results to overspending.

I’m thinking of talking to my therapist about getting help as to getting an ESD as well as my psych at the VA.  How would I go about it as far as the landlord/management goes?  Would I get the letter from both the therapist and the psych and present it to both the landlord and management?

I wrote an article for the main site detailing the steps of this process, including sample letters for your mental healthcare providers and one by you, requesting a reasonable accommodation.

However, all of this hinges on whether or not your mental health providers consider you disabled (substantially limited in one or more major life activities, such as seeing, hearing, breathing, thinking, sleeping, etc.).  If they believe that you are, then you just have them write up some letters with the information listed in the article below, and you fill out your own letter, and submit all of them to the landlord.

Here's the article:  http://servicedogcentral.org/content/node/257
