Ugh...what food should I try now?
« on: August 10, 2010, 01:06:38 PM »
It appears my dog has become intolerant to her food (Nature Balance fish and sweet potato).  Ugh.

Here are my sample options, any opinions:

Nature's Variety Instincts Rabbit
NV Instincts chicken
Canidaw grain free ALS fomula
EVO Red Meat Large Bites

Argh.  Btw, she seems to do just fine on oatmeal, scrambled eggs and some tuna.  Just vomits the whole lot up once I add her food back in.  Ugh...

Is cooking a home cooked diet for her an option?  I don't know of any kibble that is oatmeal based but if she is tolerating that well I might try doing some research and a make well balanced diet for her.  Pitcairn had a good book at one time on home cooked diets.  You used to be able to get it at dogwise.com

Ordinarily I'd suggest EVO out of those, but the company was just sold to Proctor & Gamble so the formula will probably change relatively soon. Even if the quality doesn't drop, I'm sure you don't need to mess with a formula change.

I would probably go with  one of the Nature's Variety formulas.

I know there are some foods that are "oatmeal based" but all the ones I've seen have other grains in them as well.

I definitely know what it's like trying to find a food that works. Logan did GREAT on one food for 2 weeks, then had diarrhea yet again ever since

That is something I was thinking about, but I wanted to make sure the diet was balanced and raw is not an option (cooked very much is).  I tried oatmeal because that is what I had on hand and no problems.  Then after two meals and acting perfectly fine on her dog food again, she vomited the whole lot during class yesterday (fortunately I was able to get her out the door in time).  Her skin is also nasty right now with dandruff, but her energy level is great and she is happy and alert as long as she ralfs up any kibble I give her.

I will give the NV a try tonight after I get home from my appointment... or I will give her another home cooked meal.  I am just not sure how much home cooked would equal the nutritional value of dog food.  Will definitely have to look into it.

This is a good book, I think she talks about both raw and home cooked:  http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=CDN177
ULTIMATE DIET - NATURAL NUTRITION FOR DOGS AND CATS
by Kymythy Schultze

This is the one I was thinking of origionally
DR. PITCAIRN'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO NATURAL HEALTH FOR DOGS & CATS, 3RD EDITION
by Richard & Susan Pitcairn
http://www.dogwise.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=CDN142

Pitcairn is considered the standard book on home cooked diets.  It is very comprehensive and does an excellent job of teaching you how to make a nutritioanlly balanced home cooked diet.
